Who’s The Author?
My name is Sam McNerney and I am a recent undergrad with a degree in philosophy. However, after studying too much Descartes and Nietzsche, I realized that my true passion was reading and writing about psychology and neuroscience and science journalism. Now, I am trying to find my way in the world by writing about philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.
What is the Blog About?
This blog is about connecting popular themes within psychology and neuroscience to real world events. I write about a wide range of topics including violinists, airplane crashes, and Steve Martin, but there are four ideas that run throughout most of my posts.
- Most cognition is unconscious and out of our control
- Cognition is about creating structure and understanding and not about knowledge and truth
- The mind is a dynamic embodied system
- Human beings are rationalizers.
But don’t let the academic jargon scare you. The goal of this blog is to spur conversation and debate with the lay audience.
Why, “Why We Reason”

Each post is my ongoing answer…
