Your conclusion from the suspension bridge example is incorrect. If you are flirting with some else, you don’t want *you* to be excited, you want the *someone else* to be excited. In other words, you want the someone else to walk across the suspension bridge.
I inadvertently discovered the effectiveness of this by taking a girl on a motorcycle ride on a date once; worked great. Also, there is other research showing that just the sound of a powerful engine (say in a sports car) makes a woman’s testosterone levels spike (which I’m pretty sure is shown to increase sexual desire); the same effect does not happen with men.
Now that I think about it, I believe that it works both ways Daniel. On one hand, the fear-arousing bridge helped the men call the confederates back. On the other hand, the confederates were fortunate enough to get called back. Win-win if you ask me, but it depends on their intentions.
Also, where did you hear about the effects of the engine?
In your story, the woman is trying to get the men to call her. The men are more likely to call her if they are having a more exciting physical experience. I suppose it is possible that her having a more exciting experience could be helping, but I think that is a red herring. I really doubt that it is just a symmetric situation. This should be easy to test; are you sure the woman is standing in the *middle* of the bridge, not at the end, where she would not be excited by the danger of the bridge?
I’m going to have to punt on the engine result. Sorry. Your google is as good as mine.
I see only four points here. You promised five.
Your right – must have been a typo. Fixed. Here is a make-up http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/199303/the-biology-attraction
Yea, I re-read the study. It says that “as subjects crossed either the control or experimental bridge, they were approached by the interviewer.” I just assumed that that meant the interviewers were somewhere in the middle of the bridge.
And I still think it would be a good idea to do something like cross a bridge before flirting. The idea being, you harness some courage to ask for a number or something like that. Makes sense to me – just standing in the corner and thinking about your next “move” just makes it worse. (maybe that’s just me though)
I’ll take your word regarding the engine example also.
Very nice post beholde poste sånt …!!
what hormone is responsible for the affect of excitement turning into attraction? I learned this in my social psychology class but I am unable to find my notes on it. I keep thinking it’s serotonin but I can’t help doubting myself.
Serotonin, I think.
Nice conclusions
The second point comes from Yale psychologist John Bargh, who specializes in the effects of priming. Dutton and Aron found that men interviewed on the “fear-arousing suspension bridge” called the interviewer back 50% of the time while men interviewed on the “non-fear-arousing bridge” called back 12.5% of the time. In addition, the former group were much more likely to describe the back story sexually than the later group. So if you are feeling nervous about talking to that special someone, go do something that excites your nerves first. Forskolin

On one hand, the science of attraction is simple: we are motivated to pass on our genes. Beyond this, who knows? What I have outlined here really only scratches the surface. Psychology needs at least a few more decades to even begin to understand attraction accounting software singapore

Florida, gray, weak – you would subsequently walk slower than if you took a test that didn’t contain old words). In an experiment run a few years ago, Bargh had participants hold either warm beverages or cold beverages and indicate if they thought a confederate had a warm or cold personality. He found that the participants portland eye doctor

He found that the participants who held warm beverages judged the confederate to have a warm personality while the participants who held cold beverages judged the confederate to have a cold personality. So the next time you go on a date, take her/him out for coffee instead of ice cream. (The video below describes priming well). click here
Don’t think so? Let’s look at the data. In a 2006 study, researchers from the Czech Republic found that men can recognize if females are on their period through smell. click here to read more

The instructions were the same in each scenario. Whenever male participants walked by, they asked them to a) fill out a questionnaire and b) examine an illustration of a woman covering her face and then make up a back story explaining it. george
You added a good point. It makes sense that humans with particularly would “flock” towards each other. There are a couple of factors that go into mate choice, and having clashing traits seems like it would be quite the issue down the line when trying to build a life together. But like you said, there are many factors that are included in this. In fact, during my research for my post, I found that for many groups of people, namely online gamers, physical attractiveness wasn’t the much important factor when it came to choosing relationships; rather it was social and task performance that was the desired traits (Coulson et al., 2019). I think that can be linked to your blog post in the sense that these humans are bonding over a commonality that they share, and they enjoy when others perform well at that task, specifically gaming. Perhaps it would be difficult if a gamer were to have a relationship with a nongamer because one would want to spend all their time playing, while the other may want to go around and do things in real life. Just an example of how opposites might not attract like you said.
